The Historic Preservation Commission approved a certificate of appropriateness and a rear‑yard variance for alterations at 50–52 Fair Oak Street in the Liberty Hill Landmark District on March 6. Planning staff recommended approval, finding the proposed three‑story rear addition and rebuilt garage compatible with Article 10 standards and the Secretary of the Interior Standards. The project proposes removal of a two‑story rear addition outside the district’s period of significance and construction of a new three‑story addition and a less‑prominent garage with wood siding.
Procedural note: At the start of the item the commission moved to recuse Commissioner Pearlman from the case (motion passed). During presentation, the architect (Jeffrey Justice) described visibility studies and a 15‑foot setback that will make the rear addition minimally visible from Fair Oak Street. A nearby neighbor (Chandra Raskin) spoke in support and said the owner and architect had responded to concerns and made adjustments. After public comment a motion to approve was made, seconded, and the commission voted 5–0 to approve the COA and variance with the recusal noted.
Provenance: recusal and staff/architect presentations open the item at SEG 231–SEG 260; public support and the motion to approve span SEG 408–456.
