Developers outline revised Hunters Point Shipyard plan focused on adaptive reuse and community benefits

5Point and their design team presented an informational update on March 21 for the Candlestick Point/Hunters Point Shipyard Phase 2 development. The presenters said the project will prioritize retaining and adaptively reusing a larger set of historic shipyard buildings than the 2010 approvals contemplated and will add a more mixed program including schools, maker spaces, retail, and moderated R&D density.
Therese Brecke (5Point) said the revised plan aims to better integrate historic structures and the Bayview Hunters Point community, and that the team has been meeting with the Citizens Advisory Committee, OCII and neighborhood stakeholders. Ben Tranel (Gensler) described the design vision and gave examples of "seed buildings" (large historic structures such as the dry-dock sheds) that could be adaptively reused with new insertions and public-realm improvements. He said the design-for-development documents include incentives to encourage preservation and that the team is undertaking feasibility work to determine when adaptive reuse is practicable.
Speakers from the shipyard arts and small-business communities urged retaining as many historic buildings as possible and requested incentives for rehabilitation. Commissioners praised the shift toward retention and encouraged 5Point to return with feasibility findings and additional informational briefings as the work advances toward planning approvals.
