The Historic Preservation Commission unanimously approved a legacy business application for the Jazz Room, a family-owned live-performance venue on Third Street in the Bayview neighborhood.
Shelly Keltagerone, preservation staff, said the Jazz Room was established in 1962 (with evidence of earlier operation around 1960) and had been in the same family since 1964. Staff recommended features to protect the live performance space, bar interior layout, signage and awning.
Public commenters highlighted the Jazz Rooms role in Bayview's African American cultural history and its continuing contribution to neighborhood festivals and music programming. Theo Ellington, a longtime Bayview resident, urged the commission to "move this forward," and Earl Shaddix, Third Street corridor manager, described the venue as an important cultural anchor and invited commissioners to the annual Byzantine (Butcher Town) Jazz Festival.
Commissioner Jeong moved approval; a second was recorded and the vote to approve the legacy business application passed 7 to 0.
