Planning staff presented a recommendation on Feb. 21 that the Historic Preservation Commission recommend the Phillips Building at 234–246 First Street in SoMa to the Board of Supervisors for landmark designation.
Staff described the Phillips Building as "the largest Art Deco loft building in the city" and said it is significant for its association with architects Henry H. Myers and George Klinkhart and for intact interior features such as the elevator lobby and former showroom. The landmark designation report, prepared by ARG and finalized in November 2017, found the property met two of the commission's priorities for designation: underrepresented property types and properties in underrepresented geographic areas.
There was no public comment. Commissioner (speaker 7) moved to recommend designation to the Board of Supervisors; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously, 5–0.
The commission made the recommendation to the Board of Supervisors; the department will provide additional correspondence and follow up on any review questions from the board.
