Commission recommends YMCA nomination to State with editorial revisions

Planning Department staff presented a National Register nomination for the San Francisco Central YMCA at 220 Golden Gate Avenue and recommended the commission transmit comments to the State along with a resolution of support subject to revisions.
Staff said the nomination argues local significance under criterion A for the YMCA’s role in social services and education and discussed the building’s Renaissance Revival architecture. The department recommended expanding the social welfare history in the nomination and improving the discussion of the McDougall Brothers’ architectural contribution.
Nomination preparer Frederick Knapp said the nomination emphasized what sets the central branch apart—its scale, programmatic complexity and educational role that led to the formation of Golden Gate University. Knapp noted the nomination had already been transmitted to Sacramento and that staff edits could be coordinated quickly.
Commissioners discussed editorial fixes and timing; Tim Frey and Frances McMillan said staff would work with the author to finalize edits before State consideration. The commission voted unanimously to recommend the nomination to the State subject to staff revisions.
