Commission initiates landmark designation for Phillips Building, flags windows and cell towers

Shannon Ferguson presented staff's recommendation to initiate landmark designation for the Phillips Building, a largely intact Art Deco loft building significant for its association with master architects Henry H. Myers and George R. Klinkert. The commission heard that the property was added to the landmark work program in 2012 and that recent tours found the building largely intact.
Commissioner Hyland, who toured the building, moved to initiate designation and asked staff to add recommendations to the record to monitor window work and seek relocation or removal of parapet-mounted cell‑tower equipment. Tim Frey said many such facilities predated current guidelines and that as equipment is modernized staff would ask for relocation to the roof or another property through an administrative certificate of appropriateness. The commission voted unanimously 6–0 to initiate designation with staff direction.
