The Historic Preservation Commission recommended two businesses for listing on the city's legacy business registry: Cable Car Clothiers, a downtown men's retailer founded in 1946, and Ocean Hair Design, a family-owned salon serving the Ingleside and Ocean View neighborhoods since 1996.
Stephanie Cisneros (Planning staff) summarized the nominations and staff findings that both applicants meet registry criteria. Jonathan Levin and other public speakers praised Cable Car Clothiers’ multigenerational history and community contributions. "Small businesses and family businesses, in particular, are so valuable to San Francisco," a speaker said.
Staff noted that Ocean Hair Design faces displacement risk and would benefit from registry listing. Commissioners moved to adopt the recommendations for both legacy nominations; the motion passed unanimously, 6 to 0.
The commission suggested future agenda work to explore additional preservation tools beyond registry listing to help legacy businesses remain in place during redevelopment.
