Desiree Smith (Planning staff) summarized edits made since the packet was published, including expanded context on Reverend Frederick Douglas Haynes' role, added photographs, an appendix with the California historic landmark nomination form for the church’s original location, and suggested character-defining features for the building and interior spaces. "The department recommends the HPC recommend designation to the board of supervisors," Smith told commissioners.
Reverend Amos C. Brown and other church representatives said the congregation supports designation; Reverend Brown stressed the church’s historical role in social, educational and cultural advancements for African Americans in San Francisco. "Everything that's been done for cultural, spiritual, educational, and social advancement for black people… has come out of Third Baptist Church," he said.
Staff advised that the designation report will be finalized with corrections and the edits distributed and that the commission’s recommendation will be forwarded to the Board of Supervisors. The motion to recommend the designation passed unanimously, 6 to 0.
