Commission adopts Corbett Heights historic context statement, urges future comprehensive survey

The Historic Preservation Commission adopted the Corbett Heights historic context statement on Aug. 16, approving staff’s recommendation to include a suggestion that a comprehensive neighborhood historic resource survey be completed in the future.

Department staff described the document’s purpose as a planning tool to provide a consistent framework for evaluating the neighborhood’s landscapes and residential buildings, documenting early development, post-1906 growth and postwar infill, and identifying property types and architectural character. "The item before you today is consideration to adopt the Corbett Heights historic context statement," staff said.

Gary Weiss, president of Corbett Heights Neighbors and project sponsor, said the neighborhood engaged in the process for more than five years and praised consultant Michael Corbett’s research. "We began the context statement process over 5 years ago," Weiss said, adding that the document will be an invaluable resource for future preservation efforts.

Staff and commissioners discussed that a comprehensive survey — commonly recommended in context statements — would be a logical next step to identify individual properties or districts eligible for landmarking. The commission adopted the context statement with the staff-recommended condition to include language recommending a future comprehensive historic resource survey; the motion passed unanimously, 6 to 0.

Next steps include finalizing the document with the added recommendation and making it available as a planning and evaluation tool for future preservation actions.
