SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission on May 17 recommended two businesses for the city’s Legacy Business registry: Beep's Burgers in the Ocean View neighborhood and Knessa Gallery at 708 Montgomery Street.
Stephanie Cisneros of the Planning Department summarized the applications, saying Beep's Burgers was founded in 1962 and remains a car-oriented neighborhood institution at Lee Avenue and Ocean Avenue. She described Knessa Gallery as a nonprofit artist resource founded in 1966 that has hosted readings, performances and monthly exhibits for decades.
Supporters spoke at the hearing: Neil Ballard of the Ocean Avenue Association urged the commission to back Beep's Burgers, praising owner Samantha Wong and the restaurant’s role in local events; Mark Bittner, author of The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, and Julie Jaycox urged support for Knessa Gallery’s cultural role; and Judy Irving, president of the Telegraph Hill Dwellers, put the neighborhood organization on record in favor of the gallery.
A motion to recommend both applications to the Small Business Commission was moved, seconded and passed unanimously, 6 to 0.
Outcome: The commission recommended that the Small Business Commission consider Beep's Burgers and Knessa Gallery for legacy business designation; staff noted grant and assistance programs in the Small Business Office timeline and application cycle.
