Commission hears department updates on New Era Hall, LGBTQ working group and proposed cultural heritage area

At the start of the May 3 hearing, Planning Department staff briefed the Historic Preservation Commission on several departmental matters. Tim Frey said the commission’s prior recommendation of Article 10 designation for New Era Hall had been sent to the Board of Supervisors and that the building owner is interested in pursuing a Mills Act contract to secure preservation incentives.
Frey said the department recently completed a meeting with an LGBTQ working group and will present a progress report to a Board committee once a date is scheduled. He also said Supervisor Kim introduced legislation to create a cultural heritage area recognizing Compton’s Cafeteria and the transgender community in the Tenderloin; staff will work with the supervisor to refine and present that legislation to the commission in a future hearing.
Frey asked commissioners to direct any questions to staff; no substantive questions were raised at the time. Staff said they would keep the commission informed as hearing dates and draft legislation are scheduled.
