Commission unanimously continues Fillmore landmark nomination to July 19 to allow sponsor to develop reuse plan

SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission voted unanimously on May 17 to continue consideration of the landmark nomination for properties at 546–554 Fillmore Street to July 19 to allow the sponsor and city staff additional time to coordinate a reuse plan with the landmarking process.
Andrew Junius, speaking on behalf of the project sponsor, told the commission the sponsor supports landmarking in principle but asked for a continuance so that the owner and a prospective developer can align a reuse plan with any designation. "We can work together and we can have a great win-win," Junius said, arguing that rushing a designation before reuse questions are answered could complicate future work.
Representatives of the Historic Preservation Fund Committee and the Sacred Heart community also urged the continuance, saying they want a constructive reuse that preserves the building’s historical importance while enabling viable future use. Jan Robinson of the Committee to Save St. Bridid noted local preservation groups’ support for more time to coordinate among stakeholders.
Commissioners expressed support for the request. A motion to continue the item to July 19 was moved, seconded and passed unanimously, 6 to 0. The commission placed the item on the consent calendar for follow-up scheduling.
Outcome: The matter was continued to July 19, 2017, by unanimous vote; staff and the sponsor will work on materials to bring to the July Architecture Review Committee hearing and to the HPC when the item resumes.
