Oceanwide Center presents expanded Elam Alley History Walk; commission provides design feedback

Marcel Boudreaux (Planning Department) introduced a revised version of the Oceanwide Center historic interpretive display and noted staff found the revised locations and content "adequate and reflective" of the site's history. Keith Helmutag, presenting for the project team, described a concept for an Elam Alley History Walk comprising 17 components: threshold markers, bronze paving medallions, display cases with artifacts and photographs, maps embedded in the groundscape, bas-relief trade figures, and several large digital exterior monitors to present six historical chapters.

Helmutag said the revised scheme broadened the original single-pylon approach into a distributed, destination-style walk: "It's a destination now, 1 that will hopefully draw tourists to this place and also be 1 that as people are coming and going, to businesses here, we'll rediscover every day." He described display-case content drawn from local archives and artifacts (for example, material from the Marwedel Tool Company and Neustadter's denim company) and noted ongoing research with consultant Page & Turnbull.

Commissioners commended the evolution of the design and offered several suggestions: use precise dates rather than the catch-all word "present" so future viewers understand the intended span; refine language and categories used to describe Native American presence and pre‑colonial periods; and coordinate textual vetting with archivists before finalizing exhibit wording. Commissioners also suggested marketing and outreach strategies to draw daily visitors and tourists to the alley.
