Staff recommended initiation of landmark designation for the El Rey Theater, an Art Deco theater at 1970 Ocean Avenue designed by Timothy Pflueger, citing architectural significance and intact character‑defining interior and exterior features. Planning staff noted the building meets the commission’s priorities for underrepresented property types and underrepresented geographic areas.
Multiple speakers from the Ingleside neighborhood and preservation groups urged designation and described the theater’s potential as a community venue. Commissioners asked whether initiation today would be prejudicial to the owner; staff replied there was no technical requirement to delay but said the owners had asked for a January hearing and staff would accommodate that as a courtesy.
A motion to continue the initiation to the Jan. 18, 2017 hearing carried unanimously so the commission can consider owner schedules and additional testimony. Staff will include public comments received at the Dec. 7 hearing in the file and revisit the initiation at the January meeting.
