Historic Preservation Commission adopts Central SoMa historic context statement and survey

The Historic Preservation Commission on March 16 unanimously adopted the Central SoMa Historic Context Statement and the associated historic resources survey that staff prepared as part of the Central SoMa Plan process.
Susan Parks of Planning Department staff summarized survey work from 2013–2014 covering 134 parcels bounded by Market and Townsend from Second to Sixth streets. Staff identified 63 age‑eligible properties and recommended 31 properties as eligible for the California Register, including clusters that could form new historic districts or contributors to existing ones. Parks said Article 10 and 11 recommendations included in the packet are intended for future consideration as part of the long‑range plan and environmental review.
Public commenters commended the document. Alice Light, Director of Community Planning at Todd Co., praised the inclusion of Filipino and LGBT histories and urged staff to resource a social heritage inventory; other speakers urged protection of community amenities such as the San Francisco Tennis Club. Commissioners praised staff’s work and moved to adopt the context statement and survey as drafted. The motion passed unanimously.
Staff said the adopted context statement and survey will support consistent evaluations of properties in Central SoMa and inform environmental review and future designation recommendations as the Central SoMa Plan advances.
