Interpretive boards and murals planned for 55 Laguna project; Richardson Hall restoration funds noted

Preservation staff and consultants presented draft interpretive-display materials for the 55 Laguna Street mixed-use project, designed to satisfy mitigation measures in the project’s final environmental impact report.
Shelley Caltagirone (preservation staff) introduced the boards and said materials are draft and staff will incorporate commission comments. Alisa Skaggs (Page & Turnbull) described a set of six paired interpretive boards along Waller Park, plus four additional boards focused on recovered WPA-era murals by John Emmett Garrity, Hebe Dom, Jack/John Moxon and Reuben Kadish. Each board will include a QR code linking to a project website with more detail; boards will also include historical context about the campus, architecture, and artist biographies.
Skaggs said selected mural reproductions will be displayed at Richardson Building and that plaques for Woods Hall, Richardson Hall and Woods Hall Annex will state building names, historic names, architect and landmark information. Commissioners asked about plaque copy and whether the displays accurately reflect the mitigation intent; staff said final plaque design will follow the city’s landmark signage program and include landmark numbers where appropriate.
Mercy Housing (Sharon Kristen), the developer for Richardson Hall, told the commission the project has budgeted funds to restore several murals the consultant report identified as in good condition and will pursue restoration near the end of the rehabilitation work.
Ending: Staff will incorporate commissioner edits, finalize plaque and copy with the Planning Department, and move to finalize the interpretive program consistent with the EIR mitigation measures.
