Commission approves Webster Street Italianate house rehabilitation

The Historic Preservation Commission unanimously approved a Certificate of Appropriateness for rehabilitation work at 2239 Webster Street in the Webster Street Landmark District on Oct. 21, 2015.
Staff described the property as an Italianate two‑family house constructed by Henry Hinkle in 1878–79 and recommended approval without conditions. Proposed work includes removing a nonhistoric brick garage framing to realign the garage opening with the historic front plane and recladding the opening with wood siding trimmed to match the district, adding permeable paving and plantings in the front yard, minor rear demolition to create light for proposed windows, and a new stair penthouse to access an improved roof deck at the rear. The proposed handrail at the front entry will be replaced with an iron picket railing matching nearby properties.
Project architect Dan Phipps said the team would replicate missing original bay details based on adjacent buildings and bring the building up to code while retaining character-defining features. Commissioner comments were positive and a motion to approve as designed passed unanimously 6 to 0.
Staff’s finding states the proposed work would retain the building’s contributing status and enhance the historic character of the property and district.
