Staff seeks $75,000 National Park Service grant to prepare civil‑rights National Register nominations and youth oral histories
Summary
Planning Department staff said they proposed a roughly $75,000 National Park Service grant to prepare three National Register nominations (Women’s Building, Mission Glide Memorial Church and the Japantown YWCA), paired with youth-led oral-history workshops and a mobile walking‑tour app; the department would provide staff-time match.

Planning Department staff told the commission the department has drafted a grant application to the National Park Service for certified local governments focused on underrepresented communities and civil-rights sites. The proposal would prepare three National Register nominations — for the Women’s Building, Mission Glide Memorial Church and the Japantown Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) — and support three youth-led oral-history workshops to document social and cultural contexts.
Tim Frey said the grant proposal is for about $75,000; department staff time is expected to provide an in‑kind match of up to roughly 50 percent. The project would also develop a civil-rights nomination plan to guide the Cultural Heritage Assets Committee’s potential expansion of the landmarks work program and would explore a mobile application to provide walking tours recognizing these sites.
Staff asked commissioners to note the plan will be presented to the Cultural Heritage Assets Committee and, if awarded, will inform nomination materials and public outreach. Commissioners asked for updates and staff said they would keep the commission posted on the grant outcome.
