At the start of the Historic Preservation Commission’s Aug. 6, 2014 meeting, Beverly Upton, executive director of the San Francisco Domestic Violence Consortium, and neighbor Jackie Naylor updated commissioners on community efforts to evaluate the Rube Goldberg Building for landmark designation.
Upton said Jennifer George, Rube Goldberg’s granddaughter, held a trunk show and book signing in New York and agreed to donate 10 percent of proceeds toward a feasibility report to study historic eligibility for the Goldberg Building. The speakers said they had received favorable press coverage, including an upcoming feature in the Chronicle’s Pink section. They also reported outreach to Supervisor Breed’s office and promised letters of support from officials and participants.
In response, Planning staff said the Goldberg Building and two other publicly‑requested nominations will be placed on the Aug. 20 hearing for discussion; staff is preparing owner and tenant notifications and will include a packet in the next HPC agenda so the commission can consider whether to add the nominations to its work program.
Commissioners and staff noted that the public comment was received and that any formal steps—such as adding a nomination to the work program or initiating a landmark study—would follow the August 20 staff calendar item and require property owner notification and appropriate documentation.
