The Historic Preservation Commission on Oct. 16 adopted a resolution endorsing a National Register nomination for the Mutual Savings Bank building at 1 Kearny Street, while asking the nomination to more explicitly discuss how the recently completed 2013 addition affects the building27s overall historic integrity.
Planning staff described the property as a rare 1902 French Renaissance Revival steel‑frame banking tower that survived the 1906 earthquake and later acquired a notable 1964 annex by Charles Moore, an important example of postmodern contextual design. A 2013 ten‑story addition also was completed; staff said the addition complies with Article 11 and the Secretary of the Interior27s Standards but recommended the nomination explicitly address how that 2013 edition affects integrity and include a short discussion of the original building27s structural engineering origins.
Commissioners unanimously voted to endorse the nomination (5–0) after recusing Commissioner Haase from the item because of a potential conflict. Staff will forward the Commission27s comments to the State Historic Preservation Office as part of the National Register review.
