Council adopts revised mission statement, tables proposed vision for more input

Gastonia City Council voted unanimously to adopt a revised municipal mission statement and agreed to table a proposed vision statement for further refinement.

City Manager Michael Peoples presented the revised mission language developed after a January 24 facilitator session and staff meetings. A council member read the current and proposed mission statements aloud to allow direct comparison. The council approved the revision, which replaces the prior wording with: "enhance the quality of life for all by providing innovative, responsive, and cost-effective services at the highest level."

Councilmembers expressed divergent views about the proposed vision statement, which had been condensed to "Gastonia will be a connected, engaged, and vibrant community that is a model for civic leadership." Several members said the shortened wording omitted important elements such as economic vitality, inclusiveness and the prior three-part framing of "great people, great place, great promise." Councilwoman Danielle Barber urged staff to send the language back to Centralina and solicited additional written input from councilmembers.

City Manager Peoples said staff can collect suggested edits, coordinate with Centralina, and include revised options in the agenda package for the next meeting. Council voted to table the vision statement, set a deadline for council input, and continue discussion at the next regular meeting.

The decision separates the mission (adopted) from the vision (held for further drafting) so that staff can proceed with goals and objectives work while council finalizes aspirational language.
