LAFCO previews larger FY2020‑21 budget and accepts $50,000 grant for on‑demand worker survey

LAFCO Executive Officer Brian Gobel presented a preview of the commission's FY2020‑21 budget and said LAFCO is seeking a near‑term increase in city funding to support expanded special studies and staffing. Gobel said LAFCO currently receives about $297,342 annually from the city and is requesting an additional $486,000, for a total near $784,000, to fund two full‑time positions, a public bank consultant, continuation of labor research and a modest communications plan.
Gobel noted LAFCO has supplemented its city funds with private foundation support (raising $330,000 for a labor study) and said the additional city funds would allow the commission to sustain and expand special studies without duplicating departmental work. Commissioners and public commenters generally supported pursuing increased funding, and the chair said LAFCO will advocate for the budget increase with the Board of Supervisors.
On Item 6 the commission considered and approved a resolution to accept a $50,000 grant from the Annie E. Casey Foundation for the on‑demand labor survey. Gobel said the grant will primarily pay for the survey team's data analysis and an analysis of the 18–24 age demographic. The resolution was moved, seconded and approved without objection.
