The San Francisco Entertainment Commission voted unanimously on Feb. 3 to grant a Place of Entertainment permit to the Mark Hopkins InterContinental Hotel at 999 California Street, subject to a Good Neighbor policy.
Deputy Director Azevedo told the commission the hotel’s operations have not changed and staff received three letters of support — two from neighboring hotels and one from the Nob Hill Association — and Central Station recommended approval with no added conditions. ‘‘There is no opposition for this permit and Central Station approves this permit with no added conditions,’’ Azevedo said.
Jaap Bollins, identified as the hotel’s director of food and beverage, told the commission the permit covers regular enclosed entertainment at the top of the Mark and music for private banquets and receptions. ‘‘We book it through the same agency. They’re very similar — eighties, nineties, sometimes jazz,’’ Bollins said when describing typical acts.
An unnamed commissioner moved to approve the permit with a Good Neighbor policy; the motion was seconded and the full commission voted aye. Commissioners recorded their votes individually, with Commissioner Perez, Commissioner Thomas, Vice President Camino, President Bridal, Commissioner Lee and Commissioner Falzon all voting in favor. Staff advised the hotel to follow up with the deputy director after the meeting.
The permit allows the hotel to continue hosting enclosed musical acts and banquet entertainment at the lobby and top-floor venues; the commission added the Good Neighbor policy as a condition to guide operational expectations and neighbor communications.
