Weiland said the plastic-and-litter-reduction ordinance, drafted by Supervisor Katie Tang’s office and the Department of the Environment, passed the Board of Supervisors on July 31 and was referred to the mayor’s office for signature. Staff successfully advocated to delay the ordinance’s operative date to Jan. 1, 2020, for the outdoor-event season, and secured a change that places responsibility on event organizers rather than individual food vendors, she said.
Weiland also said the commission had completed interviews for a second part‑time sound inspector, extended an offer and expected the new hire to begin the following Tuesday; the inspector will appear at the Aug. 21 hearing. She told commissioners that staff co‑hosted a productive roundtable with outdoor event producers and the Department of the Environment during the ordinance process.
Finally, Weiland reported that the Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) has launched a free online leads-training program; staff will promote the course through the commission’s channels so event operators can access the training at no cost.
No formal action was taken on these updates; commissioners asked clarifying questions and thanked staff for stakeholder engagement during ordinance negotiations.
