Bridal Tan, president of the San Francisco Entertainment Commission, recused herself on June 19 from the Commission’s item on hiring an executive director after saying she is a candidate for the position. "Because I am a candidate, I will have to recuse myself," Tan said before leaving the meeting room and passing the gavel to Commissioner Thomas.
Following Tan’s recusal, the Commission voted to convene a closed session to discuss and possibly select nominees for executive director. Staff cited the San Francisco Administrative Code and the Ralph M. Brown Act as the legal authority permitting a confidential discussion of personnel nominations. A motion to hold the closed session was moved, seconded and approved by unanimous roll-call vote.
After reconvening in open session, the Commission moved — and unanimously approved — not to disclose details of the closed-session deliberations, citing candidate privacy and the Commission’s ability to freely discuss nominations. The meeting then adjourned.
No names of nominees or the substance of closed-session discussions were released at the meeting. Commissioners who voted in the roll-call actions included Commissioner Lee, Commissioner Blyman, Commissioner Thomas, Commissioner Camino and Commissioner Perez; all recorded "aye" on the motions to hold closed session and to withhold disclosure.
Next steps: the Commission indicated it would forward nominees to the mayor as part of the administrative process; no public timetable for a final appointment was announced at the meeting.
