SAN FRANCISCO — At its Sept. 19 meeting the San Francisco Entertainment Commission approved several permit items on consent and voted to grant new entertainment permits after questioning applicants about outreach and security.
Consent calendar: Staff presented three items on the consent calendar (two limited live-performance permits and a mechanical-amusement-device permit). Acting staff said there were no neighbor complaints and that planning and police had approved the applications. Commissioners moved and approved the consent calendar unanimously.
Rumpus Room (10 Sixth Street): Owners Chris and Roxanne told the commission they plan DJs Thursday through Saturday, in-house promotions to start, a licensed security firm and increased exterior lighting to discourage congregations. Commissioner Perez and others pressed on outreach to nearby nonprofits and security staffing; the owner said he is using a licensed company called Shield Corp. Commissioner Thomas moved to approve the place-of-entertainment permit with police-recommended conditions; the motion passed with unanimous aye votes.
Burning Man Project decompression event (Pier 70): Steven Raspa and producer Justin Katz requested an extended outdoor sound permit to allow amplified sound until midnight for the 18th annual decompression event at Pier 70. Staff reported SFPD Bayview Station approval for street closures and that port approval was pending but expected; the applicant said the outdoor area would be restricted to the lower level of Pier 70 and they had letters of neighborhood support from the Dogpatch Neighborhood Association. Commissioners discussed precedent for late-hours approvals and potential condo impacts on Indiana Street; the commission approved the extension.
Chapter 116 project (2 Russia Avenue): Staff said the project was small and on consent after outreach to the Italian American Social Club and El Tapatio Nightclub; commissioners approved the item on consent.
Votes at a glance: approval of minutes; consent calendar (three permits); Rumpus Room place-of-entertainment permit approved; Pier 70 loudspeaker permit extension approved; Chapter 116 item at 2 Russia Avenue approved.
Next steps: Applicants are subject to any police conditions and ongoing inspections; staff will continue outreach and monitoring for the Pier 70 event and Rumpus Room operations.
