The San Francisco Entertainment Commission voted June 7 to grant a limited live performance permit to Ailes Unlimited Beer Basement at 222 Hyde Street, allowing stand-up comedy, open-mic nights and acoustic performances with an entertainment end-time of 10 p.m.
Owner Steve Smith told the commission he intends to operate the basement as a craft-beer-focused bar with live programming limited in scope and volume. "We only have retail, and here was the ability to do… serve the draft and the limited products," Smith said, adding the space will serve beer and wine only and that he does not plan to install a powerful PA. He described the installed system as a home stereo with a maximum output of about 150 watts and said the venue’s layout and new furnishings (including rugs and sofas) are meant to reduce echo and limit volume.
Tenderloin Station staff recommended approval with a good-neighbor policy as the primary condition; the deputy director noted no formal opposition had been filed in commission materials. Commissioners asked about outreach to neighbors; Smith said he had spoken with Faithful Fools and that the neighbor group had indicated support and could provide a written letter if necessary.
A motion to approve the limited live permit with the recommended conditions carried on a voice/roll-call vote of the commission.
