Inspectors and SFPD report largely manageable New Year’s Eve but cite unpermitted events and violations

San Francisco Entertainment Commission inspectors and San Francisco Police Department staff reported to the Commission on Jan. 6 about New Year’s Eve enforcement and inspections across the city. Inspectors presented packet materials that included sample inspection reports, notices of violation and examples of sound-inspection documentation they plan to add to future packets.
Inspector Polley described three in-depth New Year’s Eve inspections (Region, Temple Nightclub, and an event at the 8 Mission hotel), and said some one-night unpermitted events remain a compliance concern. Inspector Polley noted a new complaint from a Polk Street resident about a different venue and said staff are working with ownership to pursue soundproofing and other mitigation.
SFPD staff recapped incidents the department handled: a patron was arrested after assaulting security outside a large event, another patron was arrested after slapping a manager at the Condor Club, and SFPD issued a notice of violation to Carbon (383 Bay) for operating without a POE permit, excessive noise, blocking the sidewalk and other violations. ALU/central-station accounts described an incident at the Parlor (now called Fort 1) where officers observed intoxicated patrons allegedly being moved outside and described video documentation sent to ALU for further action; police said they will forward ALU reports to the Commission for follow-up.
Inspectors and SFPD identified recurring issues for enforcement and neighborhood safety: effective security plans for parking lots adjacent to venues, ensuring security personnel are identifiable, verifying permits for one-night events, and continued emphasis on the good-neighbor policy and sound mitigation. Commissioners and staff credited better coordination between the Commission’s inspectors and SFPD for a largely trouble-free New Year’s Eve overall, while noting specific locations will require continued monitoring and possible enforcement action.
Next steps: Staff and ALU said they will provide detailed inspection and ALU reports to the Commission and pursue notices of violation and citations where appropriate.
