San Francisco police told the Entertainment Commission that multiple serious incidents around downtown clubs in early December strained resources and prompted a coordinated enforcement response.
SFPD Central Station officer Steve Matthias summarized a Dec. 7 event near the Cellar and broader Broadway-area activity that began about 1:32 a.m., involved numerous physical fights and required multiple units. "Multiple physical fights continued to break out as the crowd exited the club," Matthias said, describing an estimated crowd of about 500 people and an extended response that cleared the area around 2:19 a.m.
A subsequent multi-agency inspection at Atmosphere found alleged ABC, fire and employment-related violations, unsecured or unlicensed security personnel and other problems. An SFPD representative told the commission state agencies cited the licensee "in excess of $100,000 in fines" and issued a stop order; the venue closed while interviews and an investigation took place. The SFPD representative said the operator had not provided workers' compensation documentation requested by inspectors and that reopening will depend on resolving those issues.
Why it matters: Commissioners were told the volume and severity of incidents required cross-agency work to investigate compliance and protect public safety. Police said they would work with commission staff to bring findings to the commission for any licensing or permit recommendations.
Next steps: SFPD and other state agencies will continue their investigation; the commission was told the matter will return to the commission "in the near future" for additional action as appropriate.
