The commission received two staff updates: one on a recently revised ordinance dealing with mechanical amusement devices and another on a late‑night/early‑morning transportation needs assessment.
Staff described a legislative sequence in which a proposed ordinance intended to clarify how establishments with mechanical amusement devices are permitted went through rapid committee revisions; after discussions involving Supervisor Breed’s office and commission staff, the team said they were able to ‘‘roll back to the original agreement’’ and preserve the department’s ability to manage bars that operate mechanical amusement devices via permit. Staff said the ordinance requires two reads and the second reading is scheduled for Sept. 2.
Commissioners asked whether the change would have financial implications. Staff replied the fiscal impact should be small: some permit application fees might be waived under the agreement, but license fees —the primary ongoing revenue — would still be charged to the department’s general fund.
Staff also updated commissioners on a late‑night/early‑morning transportation initiative: a task force has convened, working groups have met and a survey‑based needs assessment will inform a six‑month report to the Board of Supervisors. Staff noted a next task force meeting scheduled for Sept. 10 and encouraged commissioners to channel ideas through the commission president.
Commissioners asked follow‑up questions about outreach and coordination with supervisor offices; staff confirmed engagement with Supervisor Malia Cohen’s office and said the working group is staff‑level and open to suggestions through the president.
