Commission launches late‑night integrated transportation task force; economic-impact study expands to fairs and festivals

The Entertainment Commission was briefed on two planning and research efforts intended to shape San Francisco's nighttime economy: the formation of a late‑night integrated transportation task force and a phase‑two expansion of an economic‑impact study to include fairs and festivals.

Director Kane (executive director) said staff have created the late‑night transportation task force and have invited roughly 30 participants from local transit agencies, SFPD, labor unions, taxis, bars and clubs and early‑morning industries. The director said invitations have been sent and staff will break into smaller working groups after an initial meeting; the commission can expect an update to the Board of Supervisors in about six months.

On the economic-impact study, the director said the controller's office is adding fairs and festivals to its analysis and that data collection has already begun at events including the How Weird Street Fair, Beta Breakers and the Haight Street Fair. Staff said the controller's office will analyze the collected data through the fall with a targeted release early next year.

Director Kane also noted the plaza program received its final board action and will move toward implementation in coordination with the Office of Economic and Workforce Development. Separately, staff said HR is completing reference checks and fingerprinting for a recently concluded hiring process for an additional inspector, with onboarding expected in the coming weeks or for the following meeting.

Commissioners did not record formal actions on these items but asked staff to continue providing updates as these efforts develop.
