Kathy Peck, executive director of the HEAR Foundation, used the meeting’s public‑comment period to ask the Entertainment Commission to re‑examine how the city’s earplug ordinance has been implemented.
Peck said the ordinance, passed more than a decade ago with support from the Mayor’s Office and the Board of Supervisors, aimed to improve hearing conservation in nightlife venues. She urged renewed outreach and measurement of compliance, noting prior Smith‑Kettlewell research showing high prevalence of ringing among club patrons. “We really do wanna work with the clubs on increasing signage, maybe even contribute our own sample signs,” Peck said, adding the foundation could conduct free hearing screenings for venue staff.
Commissioners welcomed the proposal and invited the foundation to return with a presentation when research results or field findings are available.
