SF Jazz Center permit approved; commissioners cite education and neighborhood activation

The San Francisco Entertainment Commission unanimously approved a place-of-entertainment permit for the new SF Jazz Center, a 35,000-square-foot venue at Franklin and Fell that includes a 700‑seat Robert N. Minor Auditorium and education spaces.
Felice Swapp, the center’s executive operating director, told the commissioners the building will consolidate SF Jazz’s programs and host rehearsals, classes and community concerts. “We are really just thrilled to be at this moment where we’re able to actually bring a venue, a home for jazz, a freestanding institution of education, of food, of community, of jazz, music, to San Francisco,” Swapp said.
Support from neighborhood and cultural partners was a central part of the presentation. Jennifer Norris, assistant managing director of the War Memorial, said SF Jazz would absorb some programming displaced while Herbst Theatre is closed for renovation and urged the commission to approve the permit: “I urge you to approve their permit.” Representatives of local youth and arts groups also described planned partnerships for educational programming.
Police and staff raised no objections; Northern Station and the SFPD recommended approval. Commissioners framed the decision as a cultural and economic gain for a city block that already hosts Symphony Hall and other performing-arts institutions. The permit was approved by roll call vote and will allow SF Jazz to open its new auditorium and on-site education spaces in the coming weeks as construction finishes.
Next steps include final inspections and coordination with city departments on operational conditions already included with the permit. The commission recorded the vote as an approval with conditions noted by staff.
