SFPD reports multiple late-night assaults and thefts near clubs in entertainment district

Officer Steve Matthias of SFPD's Central Station told the Entertainment Commission on April 24 that officers responded to several disturbances and crimes near late-night venues over the previous two weeks.

Matthias described an April 22 incident at the Cellar (679 Sutter) where officers observed security escorting an intoxicated woman; he said he would discuss overserving with venue staff. He also recounted a fight at the Condor Club (560 Broadway) after a patron refused to put away a cell phone; the patron allegedly punched a security guard and a physical altercation ensued.

Matthias said on April 21, at about 2:20 a.m., a group exiting the Sugar Cafe area attacked a patron who briefly lost consciousness and had a front tooth knocked out; the suspects fled as other officers arrived. He reported grand thefts at the Impala (501 Broadway) on April 15 with an estimated loss of about $2,100 in phones and cards.

On an April 21 incident at Ruby Sky (420 Mason), Matthias read victims' statements that they felt targeted and emotionally injured; one victim is quoted in the report saying, "we've been assaulted" and that "we were just too hot," language victims used to describe being singled out. The victims declined medical treatment and could not identify suspects.

Commissioners asked whether Sugar and related venues had after-hours permits; Matthias said Sugar does not have an extended-hours permit and that some report details remain unclear. He said the department is investigating and will coordinate with Mission Station and the City Attorney where appropriate.

The commission did not take formal action on the incidents during the meeting; staff and police will follow up with operational and investigative steps.
