The Entertainment Commission approved a limited live-performance permit for Casa Sanchez on Jan. 10 after an extended, sometimes emotional public hearing that split neighbors and supporters.
Owner Martha Sanchez told commissioners that Casa Sanchez is a five-generation Mission District institution that has hosted community events for decades and that the proposed live performances would be small-scale and often daytime. "My grandfather came here in 1923 with a tortilla press tucked under his arm," Sanchez said, framing the application in family and cultural terms.
