SFPD reports weekend stabbing, assaults and warns overserving may have worsened injuries

Officer Steve Matthias of SFPD’s Central Station reported several violent incidents the commission should monitor. He said a May 22 stabbing near the Condor Club left a victim with multiple lacerations who was taken to a hospital; Central responded with seven officers and reviewed surveillance footage provided by the club.

Matthias also described an aggravated assault at The Parlor where victims left the club and were followed and attacked across the street, and an incident at Club Slide that resulted in felony assault charges for one suspect. He reported a series of pickpocket incidents and a barroom brawl that was ended before police arrival.

In each of the violent incidents Matthias described, police reports noted high intoxication levels among victims; Matthias told commissioners those intoxication levels appear to have contributed to the severity of injuries and raised concerns about overserving. He said staff would consider bringing venue managers before the commission for a discussion on overserving and possible training such as TIPS or other server‑intervention programs.

Commissioners and staff also discussed a recent negligent discharge by a contracted security guard; Inspector Grinelli said staff are coordinating with BSIS and SFPD to follow the case. During the exchange a commissioner observed that high heels have been used as weapons in recent assaults, a comment that drew a light‑hearted response but underscored concerns about injuries and security practices.

The commission did not take formal action but asked staff to continue working with SFPD and BSIS on unlicensed security companies, guard‑card compliance and possible follow‑up with venues implicated by the incidents.
