SFPD Central Station reports several nightclub-related incidents but says large events were manageable

Steve Matthias of San Francisco Police Department Central Station told the Entertainment Commission the Central District saw manageable operations on Cinco de Mayo and credited the rapport between clubs and police for preventing larger incidents. He described several troubling episodes in recent weeks.
On May 8, officers responding to an incident at Monroe were assaulted while escorting a suspect; two officers were injured and a suspect was taken into custody and booked on battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and public intoxication charges. On April 30 outside Ruby Sky, a waiting patron was attacked, resulting in a broken left cheekbone and sinus damage. On May 3 a patron at Condor Club destroyed a men's bathroom, causing approximately $800 in damage. Police also reported a theft of a purse and jacket at Mojitos on Broadway valued near $460.
Matthias said these incidents are notable but not out of the ordinary for the time of year and emphasized that proactive contact between clubs and police helped avert worse outcomes. He also reported a successful intervention when an officer recovered a loaded 40-caliber Glock on a person who had been flagged by club security.
