The Entertainment Commission addressed a slate of permit requests and continuations on Sept. 28, granting conditional approvals for some venues while continuing or deferring others pending additional planning or safety conditions.
50 Mason Social House: Staff recommended and the Commission conditionally granted a place‑of‑entertainment permit for a 49‑occupancy venue on Mason Street. Applicant representatives described neighborhood outreach and said they would comply with standard conditions including a security plan and good neighbor policies. Support letters from neighborhood and business groups were entered into the record.
2080 Venice Avenue (one block down): Applicants Christopher Johnson and partners presented outreach and a business plan for a 123‑occupancy restaurant/bar with entertainment; planning staff told the Commission the proposed uses were permitted as continuations of prior uses. The Commission approved the application conditionally on receipt of a signed lease and adherence to Northern Station conditions.
American Karaoke Center (870 Taraval) — Wendy Zhang: The Commission reviewed an extensive set of police‑recommended conditions because of prior operator problems at the site. Police recommended a six‑month 10 p.m. closing as a precaution; commissioners negotiated a compromise to permit midnight closing for six months, require professional security, camera monitoring and other Teraval Station conditions, plus staff follow‑up and an evaluation at the end of the period. The motion to grant the permit with those modifications carried on recorded Aye votes.
Continued items: Casa Hookah at 4724 Geary requested withdrawal of an after‑hours application and to pursue a place‑of‑entertainment permit; staff recommended continuing the item to allow required posting and planning review. Pandoca Karaoke (1177 Eddy) also requested continuation pending land use resolution.
Commissioners emphasized the importance of robust security plans, incident recordkeeping and neighborhood outreach when permitting higher‑risk uses. Several commissioners said they expect strict enforcement and that permits could be revoked if conditions are not followed.
