Commission honors Jack Macy with Joanna Wald Environmental Service Award

The San Francisco Commission on the Environment presented the Joanna Wald Environmental Service Award to Jack Macy on Oct. 28, honoring roughly 30 years of leadership in the city's zero-waste and organics programs.
Commissioner Bermejo introduced the recognition and recounted Macy's work to develop San Francisco's large-scale commercial and residential food composting program, work that staff and partners said influenced statewide and national efforts. Speakers at the meeting described Macy as a mentor inside the department and a leader who combined tenacity with collaboration.
Staff and community representatives provided specific recollections: Hilary Neer and Alexa Kilty (0-waste senior coordinators) described Macy's mentorship and role in major policy shifts such as the city's plastic-bag and polystyrene bans and mandates on construction and demolition resource recovery. A remote colleague joining from Brazil noted Macy's influence on international composting efforts and long-standing contributions to the field.
Jack Macy thanked the commission and colleagues and reflected on his career and the importance of purpose-driven public service. The commission closed public comment and held a photo with the honoree.
