Commission on the Environment gives inaugural Environmental Service Award to Alice Carruthers

Alice Carruthers, a community organizer and founder of programs at Alemany Farm, received the inaugural Environmental Service Award from the San Francisco Commission on the Environment on the evening the commission met. President Ometallade introduced Carruthers as “one of my personal sheroes” and described her decades of mentoring and greening work in southeast San Francisco.
Commissioners and former commission leaders highlighted Carruthers’ record mentoring youth in public housing and running Allemani/Alemany Farm programs. Joshua Arce, a former commission president, said the farm combines greening, food justice and youth workforce training and that the city is considering expanding similar programming to additional public housing sites. In accepting the award, Carruthers acknowledged community members who worked with her and described the program’s work rescuing youth from violence and providing pathways to jobs.
The commission framed the award as an opportunity to recognize local environmental leadership and to encourage replication of community-based sustainability and violence-prevention efforts. The commission opened and closed a short public-comment period tied to the award and moved on to the consent agenda after the presentation.
