Commission approves first round of San Francisco Carbon Fund grants for community projects

The San Francisco Commission on the Environment on Dec. 3 approved a set of community projects recommended for funding from the San Francisco Carbon Fund, a program that channels departmental mitigation payments into local carbon mitigation and co-benefit projects.
Staff described nine recommended grantees and project types spanning urban greening, wetland restoration and neighborhood plantings. Presentations cited projects by the AsianWeek Foundation, Friends of the Urban Forest, Golden Gate Audubon, Nature in the City and others focused in Bayview Hunters Point and other neighborhoods. Staff said the initial Carbon Fund round used roughly $200,000 plus a $23,000 contribution from an outside conference to boost the pool of funds.
Commissioners discussed the RFP process and accessibility for small community-based organizations and asked staff to survey grantees and applicants about how to simplify future rounds. The commission moved, seconded and voted to approve the recommended grants.
