Ethics staff debuts campaign finance dashboards showing fundraising totals in mayoral contest

San Francisco Ethics Commission staff demonstrated new campaign finance dashboards at the Aug. 9 meeting, highlighting donor and expenditure data for local committees and mayoral candidates.
Senior IS Engineer Tyler Field explained that the dashboards aggregate filer disclosures the commission holds and, for multi-jurisdictional committees, supplement those filings with data from the California Secretary of State. "You can see here over $10,000,000 has been raised across all types of committees," Field said when previewing the mayoral data; he also said candidate-controlled committees had raised about $4,000,000 to date and that candidate-controlled committees had spent about $3,600,000.
Field noted large participation in the city's public financing program this year and said several board of supervisors candidates had "maxed out their contribution." He said reporters had contacted the office about the dashboards and staff expects them to be a resource for journalists and the public to drill down into committee-level contributors and expenditures.
No vote was needed for the presentation; the clerk confirmed there were no remote callers for public comment on the item. Staff said the dashboards are available on the commission's website and include tabs for donor rollups, expenditures and public financing disclosures.
The presentation provided context for the commission's regulatory work on consultant filings and disclaimer rules earlier in the meeting.
