SF Environment highlights 'Environment Now' outreach program and green-jobs training

San Francisco Department of the Environment staff on Dec. 3 presented the Environment Now outreach and green-jobs program and described neighborhood-level results from a recent Bayview campaign.
Guillermo Rodriguez introduced the program and staff; program representative Keith Duis said Environment Now combines hands-on green-skills training (carpentry pre-apprenticeship, Microsoft Office and job-preparation) with door-to-door behavior-change outreach. Duis told the commission the Bayview campaign visited roughly 5,000 homes and engaged more than 2,000 residents in several languages; Recology added two trucks to routes to carry the extra diversion produced by the campaign.
The program uses tailored assessments to change resident behavior and trains local residents to serve as neighborhood outreach staff. Commissioners applauded the neighborhood-based model and praised the program for linking job training and neighborhood outreach. Staff invited residents to contact the department and noted that outreach associates are active across Bayview neighborhoods.
