San Francisco Ethics Commission elects Yvonne Lee chair, keeps hybrid public-comment option

The San Francisco Ethics Commission elected Yvonne Lee to a one-year term as chair, and re-elected Commissioner Bush as vice chair, during its Feb. 10, 2023 hybrid meeting.

The commission approved a consent calendar covering routine administrative items and draft minutes and then took up officer elections. After public comment and brief discussion of agenda-setting and continuity during a period of staff transition, each commissioner cast a roll-call vote; the clerk announced Lee’s election by a 5–0 vote for the term beginning March 1. Lee thanked her colleagues and emphasized continuity while the commission completes an executive director search.

Commissioners then nominated and confirmed Commissioner Bush to continue as vice chair. The vote to elect Bush as vice chair was also unanimous, 5–0.

Separately, commissioners debated whether to preserve remote public comment after the anticipated end of local COVID emergency orders. Public commenters, including David Pilpelt and Debbie Lerman of the San Francisco Human Network, urged the commission to keep remote participation to broaden access. The commission voted to continue hybrid meeting operations and to maintain phone and online public-comment options. The motion passed 5–0.

The meeting followed established procedural rules: staff outlined remote comment mechanics, callers were limited to three minutes (six minutes with an interpreter), and the commission confirmed a five-member quorum at the start of the meeting.

Up next: the commission will begin its March term with new leadership in place and plans to continue hybrid meetings while monitoring forthcoming citywide guidance from the city administrator.
