The San Francisco Ethics Commission unanimously approved its consent calendar, including the proposed stipulation, decision and order in the matter of John Avalos (Ethics Commission Complaint No. 13-150618).
John Avalos, a former supervisor and mayoral candidate, addressed the commission during public comment and said he accepts the settlement. Avalos acknowledged record-keeping shortcomings in his 2011 mayoral campaign but said there was no misspending and that his campaign returned $48,000 to the commission. "I accept full responsibility for my campaign and its shortcomings," he said, and added that he was prepared to deal with the consequences.
During the meeting a member of the public (Lou Anne Bassan) raised a separate administrative issue concerning a $10 late-filing fine; staff reviewed the matter on the record and said the $10 would be canceled and Bassan would receive a waiver letter.
The minutes for the commission's prior meeting were approved as amended. The consent calendar motion was moved, seconded and approved without dissent.
The commission did not take additional action on the Avalos settlement beyond approving the consent item; Avalos said he did not object to the stipulation when invited to comment.
