The San Francisco Ethics Commission elected Commissioner Chiu as its president and former judge Quentin Kopp as vice chair at a special meeting on April 18, 2018.
Following roll-call and brief public comment, commissioners opened nominations for the coming year. Commissioner Chiu was nominated and accepted; the executive director conducted a roll-call vote in which Chiu received four votes to one and was declared elected. Later, commissioners nominated and unanimously elected Judge Quentin Kopp as vice chair.
The elections took place before the commission took up its principal substantive item for the afternoon, a review of the Anti‑Corruption and Accountability Ordinance (Board of Supervisors file 180,280). Commissioners and staff said the early timing was necessary because the commission needed to vacate the meeting room by 4:15 p.m. and planned to hold a public‑comment period after voting on the ordinance.
The meeting opened with several members of the public addressing the commission, including Charlie Marsteller of Friends of Ethics, who recommended a commissioner briefing on the commission’s mission and authority, and Julian Munoz, who urged support for Judge Kopp’s leadership. New member Judge Kevin Ryan was welcomed to his first meeting.
