Vision 0 coalition urges SFFD to partner on street-safety planning

Speakers from the Vision 0 coalition urged the San Francisco Fire Department to take a more active role in the city's Vision Zero traffic-safety initiative during public comment at the Sept. 25 meeting.
"Every 14 hours on average, someone is transported to SF General after being severely injured in a traffic crash," said Malena Mackie Kebada, campaign associate at WOC San Francisco, representing more than 30 community organizations in the Vision 0 Coalition. She asked the commission to "recommit the fire department to Vision 0 not just in principle but as partners," calling for a data-based collaborative approach to street-design decisions.
Alice Rogers of the Mission Bay Neighborhood Association supported the request, saying recent interagency discussions with SFMTA and Public Works suggest the department can find common ground that preserves life‑saving response capabilities while improving street safety. "I'm hoping that we can go forward with that and as Melina said, save many, many more lives," she said.
Commissioners thanked the speakers; the matter was noted but no formal directive was recorded at the meeting. The commission and staff later reiterated interest in interagency cooperation on event and street-planning efforts.
