Commission hears detailed operations report on challenging Castro Street bank fire and mutual‑aid deployments

Letrop highlighted an August 10 incident at the Castro area (Box 5416) that initially appeared to involve the historic Castro Theatre but was an adjacent U.S. Bank at 5443 Castro Street. He described fortifications—metal gates, bullet‑resistant teller windows and a drop ceiling that created voids—and the difficulty crews faced gaining interior access. Once crews located an installed attic ladder above the bank vault and penetrated to the second story, they were able to extinguish heavy fire in the area above the vault, protecting most of the business and records, Letrop said. An after‑action report for that incident is included in the commission packet.
Letrop also reviewed mutual‑aid activity during the current fire season: "We currently have approximately 8 members deployed in overhead positions, and we have a strike team out and working at the significant fires that are going on in California now," he said. He explained mutual aid yields cost recovery — the requesting agency pays deployed chiefs’ salaries, provides backfill and an administrative fee — and said that practice produced no local fiscal impact in recent deployments.
Other items in the operations briefing included efforts to finalize a 'manual for street change' in coordination with the MTA, mayor’s office and controller; participation in Vision Zero meetings; a return of the Bureau of Fire Prevention newsletter and quiz; two recent arson arrests; development of an H4 (fire inspector) exam with 114 applicants; and staffing news for airport rescue and training divisions.
Commissioners thanked crews and officers for the Castro response and asked about training and obstacles encountered during the incident; Letrop described sharing after‑action materials across the department for learning and morning‑brief distribution. He announced upcoming NERT training and a citywide drill in October (dates discussed included Oct. 15 and Oct. 19; commissioners were told the drill would occur Oct. 19).
