Fire department updates operations: recruit academy progress, Station 49 occupancy and new equipment

Deputy Chief Jose Luis Velo briefed the Fire Commission on operations and training in April and May, reporting progress on recruit training, stations and equipment.
Velo said the 127th recruit academy started with 25 recruits and 23 remained in week 16 of 20; the academy is expected to graduate on June 25. He described multiple training classes (confined-space rescue, rescue systems, roof ventilation and vehicle-extrication props) and said the reserve academy has resumed drills.
On facilities and equipment, Velo said Station 49 staff moved into the building May 10 and that final completion was expected May 28. He gave a positive update on Station 35’s electrical work and said a new rescue boat had been delivered and would arrive at the bay imminently. Velo also reported delays at a Ferrara factory that have slowed engine deliveries and noted the department is watching warranty and inspection timing.
On ambulances, Velo said the department is evaluating alternatives to the existing van-chassis ambulance and is researching truck-chassis options used by other agencies to reduce maintenance-related downtime.
Commissioners asked about facility maintenance, plumbing and HVAC timelines. ADC of Support Services Dawn DeWitt said the department has been coordinating with the Department of Public Works; DPW completes many emergency repairs quickly and releases larger projects for outside bidding when necessary.
Next steps: academy completion and graduation planning; continued procurement work on ambulances and final punch-list work at Station 49.
