San Francisco Fire Department announces line‑of‑duty death of firefighter Christopher Yock

The San Francisco Fire Department announced on June 9 that firefighter Christopher Yock, a 21‑year department veteran assigned to the airport division and long‑time member of Station 10, died after responding to a multi‑vehicle car fire at San Francisco International Airport. Chief of Department Janine Nicholson told the Fire Commission the firefighter collapsed at home late the night after his shift and that the death is being treated as a line‑of‑duty death.

Nicholson said Yock leaves a 13‑year‑old son and an ex‑partner who also works as a firefighter. "I'm a little bit at a loss for words," Nicholson said, describing four active‑duty firefighter deaths within the past year and noting that three of the four were most likely cardiac‑related. She said department medical staff are expanding cardiac‑health messaging and screening for the membership.

Deputy Chief Brian Rubinstein and commissioners offered condolences during the meeting and thanked command staff who responded at the airport. Commissioner Francie Covington said she was "very, very sad to hear this news" and emphasized the mental, physical and emotional stresses of firefighting. The commission unanimously voted to adjourn the meeting "in memory and in honor" of Christopher Yock.

Nicholson said the department will work with the family on funeral arrangements and will provide support to station members. She urged firefighters to follow new and existing health screening guidance from the department physician and the International Association of Fire Fighters materials the department plans to distribute. The commission did not take any formal policy action at the meeting beyond the adjournment in memory; commissioners reserved additional questions and acknowledgements for subsequent agenda items.
